This Life
February 17, 2016Written by Marykate O’Malley, mother of three wonderful children, Gladwyne PA
My youngest speaks to me in Pig Latin, the great language of youth and innocence. She tells me she and a friend started a Pig Latin Club at recess, not to be outdone by French and Mandarin. We sit by the fire as she reads in a language I don’t understand, poems and books, and then says her evening prayers as such. And why not. Life is short, Pig Latin essential.
And my son, with his sisters at gymnastics, we venture to Acme for he is determined to win the million dollar monopoly prize. A chance encounter with my sister in law follows, who kindly shares her tickets, dolling them out and my son eagerly accepting the promise and hope of each folded square. We talk about what we will do if we win the grand prize, his eyes bright and animated. These are the dreams of children. I dare not wake him from his sleep.
And my oldest. Fair and kind, and on the brink of adolescence. Goodness running and pulsing through her veins that could light this world on fire with it’s radiance.
These children. This life. What else is there to feel but gratitude. What else is there to feel but sadness that it all goes much too fast.
