The Gift

A comment I hear often is – you are so good about taking your children to mass, and raising them with faith. And what I often say in reply is that it is completely self serving. Frankly, I want to be there too. And if I have children who have the foundation of a strong faith, it will make my job as a mother that much easier. I have found that faith can be the great divide and when you need it, it will truly see you through anything.
I can’t pretend to know what my children’s future and adult life will be like. I can plant the seeds, curate the soil, teach, mend, set the foundation, and yet to a great extent their fate in life it outside of my control. What is in my control is giving them this gift to see them through any and all storms that may befall them. Every life has it’s share of suffering, and faith bears all. It is a prism to understanding, and fortitude, and while giants may fall, a seedling will remain because of an unshakable, and unmovable faith in a power higher than itself.
And so the best I can, I model faith, live my faith, and set the compass for their lives. Self-serving, and self-ish – it is the gift that keeps on giving.
