Super Bowl Treats

February 4, 2010

This weekend marks the Annual deluge of eating also known as the Super Bowl.  I looooovvvvveeee Super Bowl Sunday, and I couldn’t even tell you who is playing.

Nor do I care.

(I do enjoy the commercials though.)

I use this coming Sunday as an opportunity to make all the off-limit stuff I refrain from eating the rest of the year.  Oh yum, my tummy is happy just thinking about it.

So here’s what’s on my menu this year…

Appetizers:

Potato Chips (Ruffles) and Dean’s Dips’ French Onion Dip (I consumed a lot of this on vacation once, so every time since I’m swept away to warm weather and rolling waves).  Don’t miss the Giveaway below!

Meatballs marinated in Trader Joe’s Soyaki sauce (if you don’t have a TJ’s, Mr. Yoshida’s from Costco is very close)

Chips and salsa, guacamole, and a hot bean dip (it’s a cheesy, gooey mess of yumminess)

Potato Skins (homemade, baby)

Oh, and veggies and dip just so there’s some sort of healthy living in there

Main Course:

Chili with all the fixings (we’ll all probably be full from the apps)

Dessert:

I found these Chocolate Peanut Butter Footballs over at Food Mayhem.com

Oh my!

I mean seriously.

You can find the recipe at Food Mayhem.

And Chocolate Covered Strawberries or something light like that.

Or I may just warm up the Bean dip again and call it a day.

(As a sidenote, I’m writing this while watching The Biggest Loser, and I have serious pangs of guilt right now.  But they’ll pass.)

Ok, now for your PARTY…

Steve Kemble, America’s Sassiest Lifestyle Guru and Party Planner for the Dallas Cowboys, gives these quick and easy tips for planning a perfect and sassy Super Bowl party. Over 100 million people will attend Super Bowl Parties this year, and Kemble feels if you want to have the best Super Bowl Party of them all, you must first get into the hysteria that is Super Bowl Sunday. Think pom-poms, streamers, whistles, hats, life-size cardboard novelty cut-outs of players and more.  Here we go…

Keep It Simple

Remember, it doesn’t have to be gourmet to be good. A Super Bowl Party is the most casual of all parties. By keeping it simple, you, too, can enjoy the party. Invite your friends to participate in Potluck. (If you choose Potluck, I suggest giving your friends a list of items you would like for them to bring; if you don’t, you’ll end up with 27 bags of chips!) Or you can think of items such as Chicken Wings, Egg Rolls, Quesadillas, Meatballs, Pizza (call the pizza delivery company early in the day and pre-schedule your delivery), Dips, Nachos, Ribs, Chili and more. For those healthy-conscious guests, consider having available pretzels instead of chips, cereal mix instead of mixed nuts, and fruit trays instead of cheese trays.

Go for the Green

Go to your local hardware store and purchase some inexpensive Astro-turf carpet to use as a cover for your Super Bowl Party Buffet table. Take adhesive tape and make lines to depict the yard lines on the field. Be sure and remove the chairs from your table so your guests can get to your fabulous Super Bowl Party spread without tackling each other. If you want to spread your guests throughout the house, the best way to do it is to set up separate food stations in different areas.

Dishpan Hands

No need for fine china. Go to your local party store and purchase football-themed paper goods or visit Internet sites that carry fabulous items done specifically for the Super Bowl.

Surfing

Hide the remotes so your channel flipping friends will be out of business. Besides, the commercials are sometimes the best part of the game (so plan your bathroom breaks accordingly!). Additionally, consider placing smaller TVs in various rooms throughout the house.

Dress the Part

Invite your guests to dress in the jersey or colors of their favorite team. This will add an unbelievable amount of décor, color and fun to your party at no cost to you. As the host, you should of course be dressed in a referee’s outfit.

Thanks to Steve Kemble for these great ideas!

I’m still working out our own party. Could you share your hot bean dip recipe? Sounds awesome!

I like SuperBowl parties for the snacks and pools. Quick question. Can you tell me more about the meatballs in Soyaki. I have a half used bottle that I need to use up, but I never have any inspiration.

Oh man! It’s the easiest thing: you throw frozen meatballs in a pan lover medium to medium low heat and pour Soyaki sauce all over them. Stir whenever you feel like it and serve whenever they are warm or when your guests arrive. I love the Costco meatballs!
Sill getting to that Hot Bean Dip Whit! I have to dig it out and I’ll throw it in here in the morning.

We’re going to do fun fondue (with the kids) for the Superbowl dessert this year. I just melt choc. chips and add a little cream or milk to it. On a plate I have cut up bananas, strawberries, brownie bites from Costco, and rice krispie treats (my personal fav). Yum!

Store this one away for tailgate parties this fall– at our neighbor’s Superbowl party we had chocolate rice krispie treats in the shape of footballs. They were great! (prob. not too different from the football dessert you found) I looked it up on Kellogg’s website. It’s basically a rice krispie treat made with cocoa krispies, marshmallow, & peanut butter. Icing for the footballs. Super cute! The adults loved them as much as the kids did.
