A Day in the City
January 13, 2010I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I must. We live 45 minutes (both by train and car) from New York City but the adorables have only been there a few times. I know, I know… We think nothing of an 8-hour roadtrip, but neglect the cultural mecca in our backyard.
So last Saturday we braved the 23-degree weather and made the trek to share the day with family friends.
It was divine. The famed Times Square from one direction…
And the other…
We met our friends at the HUGE Toys R Us right in Times Square.
They have an enormous ferris wheel inside.
So we jumped on and took a ride.
This T-Rex on the second floor was a hit with the elder adorable, but the younger thought it was “too scary Mommy”. It was very life-like. I for one appreciate that these animals are extinct and not lurking behind corners.
Then we taxi’d down to Max Brenner’s on 14th and Broadway for some really good grub. If I hadn’t been inhaling my food with dinosaur-like veracity, I would have photographed the chocolate pizza we ordered for dessert. Dee-Lish!
Such a magical day. And I think our adorables are finally getting to the age where we can venture into the city with some regularity. Next up: museums!

on January 13, 2010 6:39 amThere is so much to do there! How lucky that you can hop the train and get into the city so easily and not have to drive.

on January 13, 2010 7:57 pmIsn’t it funny how you never do the things that are the closest to you? I grew up near San Francisco and have never been to Alcatraz.

on February 3, 2010 7:44 amWe are heading to NYC with a 3 other families over President’s Day weekend. Any tips on family friendly restaurants that can seat parties of 13 to 17 people (one day we are 13, the next 17 + 2 that are under age 2).
Max Brenner’s looks great, but I checked their reservations and they don’t have anything for the next 30 days.
We are looking for local restaurants and want to stay away from chains that we can find in our own backyards.
MOMA is on the list of to-dos for Sunday and the Museum of Natural History for Monday. Someone else mentioned Dylan’s Candy Bar (looks like that will cost us an arm and a leg), but of course the kids REALLY want to go there.
Any other must-dos?????
The kids are mostly elementary-school aged.

on February 3, 2010 9:42 amOh fun!! You’ll have the best time. My first thought is a totally low-key Italian restaurant that is great for groups. The Running Man and I LOVE it – they have the best Chicken Parmesan I’ve EVER had. It’s Tony’s di Napoli at 147 West 43rd Street (right off Times Square by a couple blocks). (212)-221-0100. I’m going to check with friends for others, but I would give this a whirl. It’s very reasonable and I’ve never been anything other than thrilled with my dinner.

on February 3, 2010 11:34 amThis is from my friend Melissa:
For large groups I would suggest a Mars 2112, its located in times square 51st and Broadway. They take reservations for large groups, entertainment for the kids- food is so so. website- http://www.facebook.com/l/19ae3;mars2112.com
We also love Serendipity- the three kings. Great food and fun atmosphere. Arrive early for a table this place is always packed- lunch is the but will take reservations- 225 East 60th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues.
Peanut Butter & Co. – Fun peanut butter sandwiches!! Very small, it’s walk in and order and grab a seat. Fun, but again small place.
The Peanut Butter & Co. Sandwich Shop is located in the heart of Greenwich Village at 240 Sullivan Street, between Bleecker and West 3rd Streets, just 1 block south of Washington Square Park and NYU.
