My Dissertation on Mittens and Gloves

January 5, 2011

Well, it’s not really a dissertation as much as 2 quick points:

1) Every year I buy loads of those 2 for $1.50 gloves at Target.

***A note to Target: please bring back the 2 pairs of BLACK gloves.  I’m not fond of this striped pair.  All black is best!  Thank you.

I put them everywhere: in the car, in every coat pocket, and in a big bin by the front door so we can grab them as we head out.

When I unpacked our mound of new gloves, Running Man gave me a very concerned look and said, “How much did that cost us?”

I replied, “$7.50”.

He now swears by them for use as running gloves.  The key is that they’re not too hot, he says.

This year, Target has loads of gloves for the adorables at 2 for $1.00.  I love having them everywhere, and not worrying if they’ll lose them, which they inevitably will.  Every week or so, I reach into their schoolbags and transfer the 4 or 5 pairs that have collected there back to the bin.

They do have girl colors too, but we don’t have any of those around here.  🙁

At the end of the year, I dispose of all the gloves that have holes and load up again come fall.

2. Snowstoppers!

These gloves ($14.95) have extra long sleeves so they won’t fall off easily.  We use these for any heavy duty snow weather (which unfortunately, we have around here currently).

You can find them at snowstoppers.com.

And that’s it.  Not really a dissertation.  What works for you?  Any favorites out there?

I don’t wear gloves that often, but I DO wear them when I run. I rub a nice, thick cream into my very dry hands, pull on my gloves, and head out. I’ve heard (from other runners) that the inexpensive gloves are great – especially as ‘toss-aways’ during a race – but I spent a bit more on mine, and I LOVE them. I have the Saucony Ulti-Mitt II – they have a wind-resistant ‘mitten’ that folds over the glove to keep my hands super warm. I usually start out with the mitten flap over the gloves, and then I tuck it into the pocket (and just have the glove part on) when I warm up.

Could I have waited any longer to comment on this?!! We found gloves we love at REI that both velcro and cinch at the waist. My boys have small hands so I bought 2T and they’re almost 4! Mainly, though, because I know you love Target, I wanted to mention the Champion shirts that are like second skins they are selling. You know, the smooth, spandexish material in bright colors like the professional athletes wear under uniforms. The Target shirts are AWESOME! My boys feel like they are superheros in them, they’re cheap, and I bought the small in boys so I’m hoping they will be able to wear them next year too but they are so tight fitting that they work great right now and the arms are so long that you can pull them out into the glove and cinch over top of it. They came in from lots of snow play and their hands and chests were WARM to the touch!

Wrist, wrist, not waist!! Lord, if they cinched at the waist, snow would NEVER get in, hah!

I buy the cheap Target gloves all the time for myself.
I can get colors to match any coat or vest.
    They fit my small hands.
They are cheap enough that I don’t freak when I lose them.
They wash up nicely and as you said, when the seams start to pull away or they won’t clean up in the laundry, I just buy more.
