Kidisms
October 17, 2012Written by Marykate Wurster, mother of three wonderful children, Gladwyne, PA
Thank you Rachel McGinn photography for the photo
Every child has those things they say, that I know I should correct, but wouldn’t dare because, well, they are so adorable. Here are my favorite kidisms:
- My youngest says “sidewards” for sideways. You know, frontwards, backwards – sidewards. Please don’t tell her it is sideways. I am hanging on to this one as long as I can.
- My oldest said “living loom” for years. I let her say that for much, much, much longer than I should have. And kind of wish she still said it. Although she is now 8 and that would be weird.
- My son says “edelwig” – give up? Come on now – you are close, closer. Because I love the Sound of Music, my children have to as well. It is a requirement. Edelwig is Edelweiss. I would sing it for you but you can’t hear me. And that is probably a good thing. Moving on.
- He used to say “gubble gum” for bubble gum. Sweetness.
- My youngest calls her Charlotte’s Web Wilbur pig – “Wilbert”. Love. Wilbert.
- And calls pretzels “cretzels” – not correcting that one either – let someone on the bus point it out. Which I am learning is a fodder for all kinds of conversations.
- My oldest also said “someking” for something for years – miss that one too.
- My son says “super Mario Bros” – never brothers – he says brooows and draws it out just like that. And I just realized maybe he is right and I am an out of touch Mom. It wouldn’t be the first time. And moving on.
- They all said a version of “baby soup” or “baby suit” for bathing suit.
What are your favorite kidisms? Share, please. I love these!

on October 18, 2012 7:05 amMy son calls guacamole “rockamole”, we all like mine the best and it has gladly kept its name. He also says “bisghetti” for spaghetti, he’s 4 years old. Love those kidisms:)

on October 18, 2012 8:54 amLOVED his hop-da-copter for helicopter.
“diddy” was his first word – pointing at our kitty cat >^,,^<
ni-ni was his word for breastfeeding. I had no idea where he got that one, but I must have responded one time and it stuck. (I had a laugh when years later I visited Hawaii and saw the sign for the Ni Ni bird)

on October 18, 2012 10:56 amOh I love these! My younger son says “Lemilade” for lemonade and “lellow” for yellow.
But my all-time favorite has permanently joined our family lexicon: “Huggle” as in “Mommy, will you huggle on the couch with me?” Answer: Yes, every time!

on October 18, 2012 8:46 pmCute stuff – I should have been writing my kids words down, but I’m so bad about that. One I can think of right now is my 5 yr old thinking that the opposite of “upside-down” is “re-side-up.”

on October 20, 2012 8:09 amMy son is 31 now ( the father of Mary Kate’s twin nephews) but I still remember…”The Statue of Libby” in NYC, his favorite cookies were Chewy Chips Avoy, and he called the photo album ( yes, we had those back in the day) a “phobu album”

on October 22, 2012 8:12 amOh my gosh, these are too cute!!!!! 🙂 It cracks me up MaryKate that the bus is now a very amusing source of information. From teaching(the seven year olds) I too loved pusghetti(a tough one) and my other favorite skizzers. The English language is tough to learn and we are so lucky to hear the butchering of it. 😉 This is making me miss teaching and the hysterical things you hear/see. My little guys are just conquering language but so far I love herm for home and trees for broccoli. I believe it’s just a tough word and they know it looks like a tree. Mom, I looove the Statue of Libby. This inspires me to starting things down again…

on October 22, 2012 9:26 pmI love reading these! My youngest daughter said the other day – Mom when I am a grown up, i want to be a growns sup. In response to what she wants to be when she grows up. She is deep like that, takes after her old mum.
