Anywhere Ice Cream
July 11, 2013written by Cathy Baker, mom of two sweet tweens, who wish I’d let them eat ice cream every day.
Our family LOVES ice cream. It’s our go-to-celebration for, well for just about anything. I mean, what’s not to love about ice cream, especially during these hot summer days!?!
A few years ago, my mom got us one of these Ice Cream Balls. The ‘cool’ thing about this is it that you can make ice cream….ANYWHERE!!!
On one side you put all your ingredients. On the opposite side you load in your ice and salt. And then, you either sit down and roll it around, or kick it around with your feet. We stop every five minutes and so and add more ice and salt, to keep it very cold and make the process go quicker. (Tip: You’ll need a lot of ice…almost an entire bag!) The directions say 30 minutes, we got it to a firm enough state to eat it after about 20 minutes.
Here’s some pics of when we took our ball to the drive-in last week.
psst – If you want the Behind-the-scenes story of our Drive-In Family Night, you can read about it at Moments on the Journey.
I use the easiest, no-egg, recipe I can find for the ice cream mixture, found in my BH&G Cookbook.
Side note: My mom has this cookbook (older version) and she gave me one for our wedding, and I’m sure I will get the latest version one day for my girls. I use a lot of online recipes these days, but this is my go-to cookbook for tried and true recipes.
HOMEMADE ICE CREAM MIX
The actual recipe is:
- 3 cups Heavy Whipping Cream
- 1 1/2 cups Sugar
- 3 cups Half & Half
- 1 tsp. vanilla.
My revised recipe (so it fits perfectly into the quart-sized ball; makes 6 nice-size portions; 8 smaller portions.)
- 1 1/2 cups Heavy Whipping Cream
- 3/4 cup Sugar
- 1 1/2 cups Chocolate Whole Milk
- 1/2 teas. vanilla
- extra Hershey’s chocolate sauce…a squirt or two…or three! 🙂
- feel free to also crumble candy bars on top, our favorite: Reecee’s PB Cups
I mix it up ahead of time and just pour it into a large sports-bottle. Easy to pour later and easy to cleanup!
Think of the possibilities…camping, at the drive-in, on the boat, picnic at the park, backyard fun!
