After the Winter
March 6, 2014written by Cathy Baker, mom of two tweens, living in the Missouri Ozarks
After reading Marykate’s and Heidi’s articles about their family ski trips this week, I’m thinking maybe I should be going off skiing somewhere too!!
Looks SO fun.
I do believe I’d appreciate this very long winter if I was heading out skiing too! We had 2 more snow days this week, but THIS Friday Spring Break begins for us!! (This Friday is also my CSI guy’s birthday and my parents are coming to visit from Michigan — big day!!)
So I’ve got springtime on the brain. Honestly, my soul is needing the replenishment of spring. It is without a doubt my favorite season.
The earth waking up after a long winter, all the shades of green announcing renewal, the warmth creeping back into the soil and into my heart, and the flowers painting the landscape a thousand different colors.
Oh, and tonight, when I was walking up my walkway, I saw the first signs of green pushing their way up through the soil. It made my smile out-loud.
I had to memorize this poem back in the days, and although it’s been over 25 years, I’ve never forgotten it! Hope you enjoy the wonder of the poem too.
Fueled
by Marcie Hans
by a million
man-made
wings of fire-
the rocket tore a tunnel
through the sky-
and everybody cheered.
only by a thought from God-
the seedling
urged its way
through thicknesses of black-
and as it pierced
the heavy ceiling of the soil-
and lauched itself
up into outer space –
no
one
even
clapped.

on March 6, 2014 9:34 pmOkay so kindred spirits! My favorite season too!! I just love all of it – the newness and new life every where and how much we appreciate the warmer weather and being outdoors. I feel like we all come out of hibernation – my kids still talk about the first warm day last spring when all the neighborhood kids were out and I ran and grabbed Popsicles from the fridge for them to hand out – in July would have been another day but in April it was something to celebrate.
