Why I Wake Early
Sometimes laundry, often 2 loads before 6:30 am. Coffee, always coffee, or yoga, or spin, or soulful walks in the warmer weather when the temperature rests above 5o.
Or Jesus Calling, or emails, or poetry, or Mary Oliver and the golden sticks of the sun, and hello sunshine in my face. Or lunches to pack, or dinner to prep, into the crock pot, or into the fridge ready for the oven at 5 pm.
Or Christmas cards, or Christmas lists, or silence, or stillness, the lull of sleeping children.
Or the quiet of snow, the stillness of white blanketing this earth – and silver breath that freezes mid air and hovers about your face cold and dense like a soft cloud before being absorbed into the great and kind knowing. Or the moon, white and round and full that greets you during the sacred space between night and day.
For this earth waking, and foxes leaving their den, and sparrows darting about in the snow, for deer foraging. and all life greeting moonlight and sunlight together as the star climbs from her slumber to greet each one anew.
Why I Wake Early
by Mary Oliver
Hello, sun in my face.
Hello, you who make the morning
and spread it over the fields
and into the faces of the tulips
and the nodding morning glories,
and into the windows of, even, the
miserable and crotchety–
best preacher that ever was,
dear star, that just happens
to be where you are in the universe
to keep us from ever-darkness,
to ease us with warm touching,
to hold us in the great hands of light–
good morning, good morning, good morning.
Watch, now, how I start the day
in happiness, in kindness.
