My take on the vegetable garden
June 3, 2009Forgive me for all these gardening posts, but it’s spring and I dream of flowers and mulch and home-grown tomatoes and hydrangeas all night long.
I’ve drooled over 4-square walled vegetable gardens, perhaps with a Hartley Botanical house on one side where I could start seeds and possibly enjoy a wintertime crop.
But alas, funds and a severely limited yard deter my efforts.
So instead I get a little strip next to the driveway that the Running Man says I must clear out after the season because its the only place to put snow when we shovel the driveway. Hello, reality.
In this little strip I have tomatoes, lettuce, basil, cucumbers, sugar snap peas, sunflowers, green peppers, and marigolds to stave off the animals. It’s kind of a wonder that I can cram so much in a small space.
For the first time I’m trying these red trays from Gardener’s Supply. In the past, the squirrels ate the roots, so my logic was that these trays would make it more difficult for the squirrels to get to them. The red color is also supposed to stimulate growth. I’ll let you know if it works. You can find them here.
The green tomato ladders are also from Gardener’s Supply and I’ve been using them for 3 years. They look so much better than the old cylinder things I had before. Click here to see them.
Can’t wait for harvest time!
