Family Movie Night
October 20, 2014Written by Marykate O’Malley, mother of three wonderful children, Gladwyne PA
I love that my children are now of an age where we can watch a movie together that isn’t animated, with a deeper message and meaning. Here are some of our favorites. I would love to know yours!
- Gabby Douglas movie – we watched this on demand this past weekend. I cried through the entire movie. That bears repeating – the entire movie. The single mom theme really touched me. And the determination, and message of never giving up. It’s simply a beautiful story.
- Invincible – being from Philadelphia, this movie is near and dear to my heart. We loved it. And were lucky enough to hear the inspirational Vince Papale speak with my amazing friend Jen Groover. Another family favorite that has something for everyone. The best part? Chances are your local library carries it. Mine did.
- Miracle – another local library favorite! And inspirational tale.
- Soul Surfer – we love this movie. You will cry for sure. And probably not fast forward at all. Except the shark attack – if under 6 it may be scary.
- Mighty Macs – a sleeper and must see. Think Hoosiers but girls. Another Philadelphia story about the little team that could. It is so refreshing to see a girl sports movie.
- Million Dollar Arm – my son couldn’t wait for this. We had a couple fast forwards and overall fantastic.
- Field of Dreams – Again, a few fast forwards. Otherwise, love.this.movie. “If you build it they will come.” In other words, believe. In other words – it isn’t do then be. It is be, then do. Get it? I can explain if you want me to. You probably don’t so I will respectfully move on…
- Rudy – you are seeing a theme here. I love underdog movies. And apparently sports themed movies. Interesting. That ones surprises me. This is a great one but you want to be ready for some words and fights to skip through.
- Seabiscuit – A gorgeous movie, so visually beautiful. I love Laura Hillenbrand. If you haven’t read Unbroken you must. Through most of the book one thought repeated – I will never complain again. Of course I did but I think you know what I mean. It’s powerful.
We watch Elf year round. It never gets old. I love the nostalgia feel of the Muppets movies – Rainbow Connection – need I say more. Next on my list? Making our way through musicals. We need to branch out from The Sound of Music and Annie. I am thinking Oklahoma, The Music Man, The King and I. “Shall we dance! one two three, on a bright cloud of music, shall we dance, shall we fly”….
Okay, what have you got?
