Creative (Gasp!) Mess
March 7, 2013written by Cathy Baker, mom of two creative girls
By now, I should be use to walking down my basement stairs, turning the corner and seeing things like this:
I really shouldn’t suck in my breath and my eyes really shouldn’t go all bug-eyed when they take in the scene before me. But they do. Silly me, I *thought* this was a mess. But after my “what in the world?” I was informed it is a ball pit for their barbies. All those ‘balls’ have been dumped out of our beanbag. Oh yes.
So then I wander into the basement bathroom, and behold this…
Again, the gasp, the wide-eyes. But I see they have spent a lot of time on this. So, I ask them about it. It’s a Barbie mansion. *Notice the lack of actual barbies living here – designing the architecture is much more fun! There is a gymnastics area, a pool, bunkbeds. Oh, and I guess at one time, the ball pit was here too. It was bedtime, so I told them they would need to clean it up tomorrow (probably a bit more ‘motherly’ than I needed to be). And then I left them this note…
I’m thankful for my girls creativity. I’m thankful we have ‘down-time’ in our days for them to create things like this. And I’m really glad we have a basement, where most of the time it is ‘out of the way’!
Here’s a picture from another time I walked downstairs…
You can read more about this elaborate reading tent/dressing room/maze here.
So, does anyone else’s house ever look like this?! I’m choosing to believe it is the picture of a happy childhood!

on March 7, 2013 7:44 amI love the creativity for your girls’ mess! And I absolutely LOVE the creativity of your note!! My boys is more of a whirlwind mess. Forts that up-end every piece of furniture/toys/basketball hoops, etc. Luckily, they are pretty good at cleaning it all up!

on March 7, 2013 12:45 pmLove it! I have so many similar experiences. usually involving legos, blocks, train tracks, planes or the Titanic. Other memorable times have involved baking soda and craisens (snowball fight in the kitchen), baby powder and lotion (live little snowmen and a “snowy” bedroom). One of my favorites (NOT!) was when they decided to empty a bottle of lotion and scoop out a giant tub of vaseline on the tile of the bathroom to make an indoor skating rink while I was on the phone. I got off to hear shrieks of laughter and loud bangs out of the bathroom. Sadly they were too young to be trusted with the clean-up.

on June 26, 2013 1:38 pmSo precious that our littles are creative…yet, we moms see the reality in the mess. Make a mess…clean a mess…it goes on and on. I miss our KS basement. We now live in FL…so such thing as a basement here! So…we live with less square footage, but we do have a swimming pool so that is a God-send! I thank you for stopping by my blog today. Encouraging one mom to another. Have a great summer! Enjoy these memories amidst the mess!
